Back in the 50's, they used to have these in public washrooms.
Each patron needed a nickel and then you would insert the nickel in the slot and pull. If you didn't have a nickel you had to crawl under the door or wait for someone to finish so you could enter without having to pay a nickel. I remember this happened to me once at Riverview Park in Chicago, Illinois and I almost didn't make it to the bathroom in time because my brother wouldn't give me a nickel.
